Hmmm... I think I'd agree on the self-development point, but on the economic issue, the data (given the lag in reaping the benefits) might suggest a latter PhD has even less chance of earning a return (although of course there are many non-pecuniary rewards from research)... but certainly all PG degrees are seen as cashews by business-shaped #universities
