What's a reasonable backup retention policy?

Currently I take three snapshots a day, but haven't set a retention policy to remove old snapshots i won't need anymore. Issue is, How long do I really *need* to retain them? 7 days? 14? a month? three months?

What thought goes into selecting such a retention policy anyway?
