I would argue we always want dimensionless ratios and usually we want time averages over a fraction of a lifetime. A reasonable one to care about is smooth(income) / smooth(expenditure rate) for expenditure rate being the cost of things like housing food transportation, health, and childcare and the smoothing function being maybe an exponential moving average with a timescale of say 0.05 lifetimes which is more or less 4-5 years.
