In the 80s and early 90s, so much martial arts was absolute bullshit.
One of the most famous martial artists back then, Frank Dux—who inspired the film Bloodsport—was a fraud. Steven Seagal was able to get a Hollywood career simply because he was the first Westerner to teach Aikido, another martial art of questionable effectiveness. There were “ninjas” like Ashida Kim making a living by preying on the gullible.
There were strip malls full of karate dojos that were basically giving out black belts. They were referred to as “black belt mills” for good reason.
So I’m actually glad that MMA exists because so much hookum got exposed because of it. There’s no ninjutsu practitioners who actually win at MMA for a reason. Nobody wins through the mystical transfer of qi.
