I grew up with the Cure and the Banshees which I am informed, of course, are not Goth. And goth music to me is The Mission, Sisters of Mercy, All About Eve and Fields of the Nephilim which again, I am often informed, are somehow not Goth.
Not being Goth myself, I have no axe to grind or gate to keep so it's all good! :)
