The Banks Peninsula Conservation Trust released a bunch of them near Akaroa in 2009 and 2010, taken from Maud Island/Te Pākeka in the Marlborough Sounds. Maud was judged the nearest habitat with enough tūī to spare. This was done to restart the Banks Peninsula and Christchurch population, which has been slowly working.
