Oh, for sure light is the enemy. But if you print your own photos on your home printer, they will fade much faster/easier. Labs use archival paper and inks, which helps a lot. Light will 'bleach' all kinds of things, from fabrics to watercolours.
The emulsion on old photos can also get very dry and brittle, especially really old ones, so humidity can factor in as well.
