I recognize these faces from my youth, as well as my adult life. They were gaunt, seething, sullen, bony, and bitter. Depending on the time of year, they were anywhere from ashen to ruddy, and from ruddy to sallow. They also came in gravy-fed plump. They’re the faces I had always imagined were under the white hoods. While still a child, I learned that I was right.

Every racist looks different from the others, but there’s a certain nature, glance, and tone that none of them can shake.
