I met Lyn Ulbricht at Anarchapulco in 2019. I was invited to the conference to screen the pilot episode of the animated series I was producing, “Bitcoin & Friends.” She reminded me a bit of my own mother. I could see that she was not going to give up on her son in spite of the odds and the weight of his sentence.
Regardless of where you stand on the criminality of the Silk Road and Ross’ involvement, most sensible people can see that the punishment did not fit the crime. It is my belief that Ross was targeted to be made an example of because Bitcoin was perceived to be a direct threat to the US government’s god-like control of commerce, drugs, banking and most importantly, dollar hegemony.
During the eleven years that transpired after Ross’ arrest, Bitcoin has grown into an unstoppable global monetary network and it seems some in the US Government have realized that we are at the “if you can’t beat them, join them” stage in this process. From here, Bitcoin’s biggest existential risk is co-option. This is why Bitcoiners need to understand the history and culture of the pioneers who gave us this amazing gift. Bitcoin was never a get rich quick scheme. It is a principled movement with the express purpose of building a global monetary system which is separate from state control. A fair and neutral money.
I’m thrilled that Ross is free and look forward to seeing what he will do with his freedom. I hope Ross watches Bitcoin & Friends someday. He is one of the main characters in the story. We wanted to do what we could to spread awareness and I like to think that perhaps we played a tiny part in helping him.
