I was about 10 years old, and I had a family member who was in CDF (at the time CA Dept of Forestry) as a fireman. He was originally a smoke jumper, then CDF firefighter, and eventually made Captain, etc. But he told me back in the mid 80's, I was the wrong skin color, and they didn't want me because of affirmative action. I just wanted to be a firefighter like him. Pretty sad, even back then it was obvious racism and not merit would guide fire protection. Big middle F!
