As someone who recently cut out nicotine after ~5 years of heavy use, I’ve observed the process of paring down traditional social media use is a startlingly similar process. Cravings, boredom, and anxiety are all present to a lesser degree.
It’s both disturbing and empowering recognizing this and I plan to continue gradually closing traditional social media accounts.
I firmly believe the “fake” dopamine spurred by the endless scrolling is a critical mechanism through which complacency develops and I’m intent on preventing that.
