There was a time when the ability to read without moving your lips was considered a giant intellectual achievement. Then we developed the “technology” of writing out vowels in words and not just consonants. This technological innovation meant reading got much easier. There were actual debates at the time that said that writing with vowels was cheapening the mind and reducing people’s ability to think. Now we’re happy to have an easier writing system. The very same argument was made saying listening to an audio book wasn’t really reading it. Or using an LLM is undermining the intellect.
