figured out that android helpfully kills every running app when the wallpaper changes to apply new colours to the theme
and i had my phone set to change wallpaper every time i turn the screen on
now that i've disabled my automatic theming suddenly my apps aren't closing themselves anymore
it took a factory reset to work this out but at least the damn phone works now
