Because if there's no-one to investigate crime, what's stopping the rich from abusing their power? What the US should do is stop funding the "defense industry." It's a monster that is actually costing billions to the taxpayer with no benefit. And then you can redirect much of that money to the communities, hospitals, etc, which would fight poverty for example.
