I have four contracts with Getty, because I work with them in various ways for the last decade.

Sometimes it’s work for hire where I accept a day/assignment rate for my work other times I’m a contributor and I collect royalties, and those contracts are generally invite only. I got mine by standing up for a Getty staffer at NYFW in 2017 when I decked a shutterstock photographer who was being a dick.

Sometimes politics won’t let me put certain event coverage on Getty due to conflict of interest with their corporate clients, so I also have contracts with all of their competitors where I can file stuff if my primary distribution partner won’t take it. I suggest starting with other stock agencies, as they’ll take this sort of content as you learn industry metadata standards…

Beyond that, the images sit there, until a blogger or journalist needs a stock image of a certain personality and they have subscriptions to license photos with Getty, so it works like revenue sharing on Spotify for artists, or sometimes the photos are incensed for more than a few cents for print use…

in any case, my job is to create the best photos possible form any vantage point, file them, and they’re the sales force that sends me royalties checks every month for every image I own the rights to that gets used.

No way to predict which photos will be used, when they’ll be needed, but the bigger your archive of images, the more likely you compete every time a newsworthy event needs a photo to license for their media service.
