This is an endemic attitude that actually sort of crosses political lines often enough -- Americans are so conditioned by decades of exceptionalism that there's this tendency -- and yes, #notallamericans -- to not see other countries as "real", and that goes 500000x for Canada, a place ruined by proximity and language.
