Moreover, I only recently found out that there’s a common ancestor for Hubzilla and Friendica. Before that, I thought they had split off by budding. :)
They have. Kind of.

It all started in July, 2010 when Mike launched Mistpark.

Later in 2010, he renamed Mistpark into Friendika because if Mistpark was German, it'd mean "manure park", and because the desired domain with "Friendica" wasn't available yet.

In early 2012, he renamed it into Friendica.

Shortly afterwards, he forked Friendica into Red and passed the development of Friendica on to the community which relicensed it from the MIT license to the AGPLv3 later on.

Later in 2012, he renamed Red into the Red Matrix because Googling Red would be futile.

The Red Matrix didn't take off, though. It was completely rebuilt behind the UI, but it was practically Friendica with nomadic identity. Friendica was mostly a self-hosting thing where nomadic identity is pretty futile, so next to nobody wanted to switch over from Friendica because nobody saw any advantage in it.

And so in early 2015, the Red Matrix was repurposed. It was targetted at hosters of public instances. To make it more attractive, it was expanded to a "decentralised social CMS", and it was renamed Hubzilla.

Technically speaking, Hubzilla is a direct fork of Friendica.
