'Compassion' reports that more than 7,500 personnel are working tirelessly to beat back the blazes consuming Los Angeles. Among their ranks are 939 incarcerated men and women. The Golden State established the program in 1915. Eligible inmates must demonstrate good behavior to live and work at one of 35 minimum security fire camps across the state. They earn between $5.80 and $10.24 per day, with an additional salary of $1 per day from Cal Fire during active emergencies.
