In the end, even though it's annoying, the general idea of negotiation before supplying power is not too bad. We have enough working one wire protocols and if there is no handshake, one could assume, that no higher voltage is requested, required or supported :D Creating your own plug is not feasible, and when reusing something else, you should always account for accidental misuse.
