It's a very strange thing, to clear out a deceased elderly relative's things.
Surrounded by ghosts of my own childhood, and nearly suffocated by the weight of half remembered ancestors. And everyone sits about drinking coffee, or (god help us) Ovaltine, and says "remember when". And there's all this accumulated stuff, and misfiled papers, and it's a legacy of a life lived fully.
And, we go for a drive, and all the family farms and ranches are now corporate and there's abandoned house yards and forgotten gardens that were once someone's whole world, and all their dreams, and now they're a pile of crumbling boards.
And all our hopes, and all our fears are nothing but hollow vanity and self delusion, and they're going to be swept away by the wind and the sun and the snow.
And I have to call the lawyer and the funeral home, again, when they open.
But, yes, please, I would like a cinnamon roll for breakfast, and, yes, we do need more coffee.
