I looked more into the Pico-8 PNG cartridge format (never actually viewed one, I usually use the .p8 binary format).
The PNG is an actual pixel art image of a cartridge.
The cartridge label includes the last screenshot captured by the program (press F7). If your Lua code starts with a comment, that's included on the cartridge too.
The actual game data is embedded with steganography, it used the lower 2 bits of each colour channel, so you can't easily tell it's there.
Pretty cool.
