anyone know a decent, clear, helpful source on how read or evaluate functions work?

I read the Elisp manual on them, which was eye-opening (ie lisps distinguish the two processes in a way that many other languages do not), but it didnt really explain reading as such.

im interested in thinking about it in proximity to Kittler and considering what kind of violence/abstraction it does to natural language.
