I bought a refurbished laptop for a student research assistant to use, and I was going to install Ubuntu on it, but I would have to first make a bootable USB stick and download Ubuntu which is apparently going to take at least half an hour...

I think I'm just going to go to bed and my student can use whatever awful Windows is already on this laptop, since she uses windows anyway and all research work will be through browser-accessed VMs/containers.
