I don't think Mastodon developers lack ambition, but they seem to lack resources.
The official roadmap https://joinmastodon.org/roadmap hasn't changed much since the version 4.0 came out two years ago. The development has been focused mostly on features which are not visible or important for most of the users. Has it become already too complicated to develop faster?
