My thinking of this is very much guided by Margaret Archer's book Culture & Agency... which puts a strong emphasis on shifting attitudes & mores; I accept its a bit academic (a bit!) as a book, but if you did fancy it, you might find it of interest (if only to modify your jaded-ness a little) - equally if its not your thing, completely understand
