to be honest, i've never felt the need. if a detail is so arcane that you can't answer questions about it by reading articles and books, your audience is not going to know about it, either. so nobody really cares.
at the end of the day, it's fiction, and artistic licence applies. if the lacing on someone's bodice is out of style for 1773 or whatever, then i'll live with it.
