The issue goes deeper in my opinion. AI is following the natural evolution of computational power in that it’s becoming a means of social dominance due to its increasing sophistication, the same way money has served to create a two-tiered society for centuries—the wealthy and the rest. The internet revolution was a people’s revolution where all you needed to access it was a PC. Now that this digital system is mature and far more complex, it’s access is becoming increasingly restrictive and the gatekeepers more influential and powerful.
People are already talking about this two-tier society made possible by AI, some of whom are actively working for its materialization; and are not interested in the welfare of the people, unsurprisingly. They will most likely succeed in creating this society, but to think that humans in this new AI-powered world won’t need humans for anything is a bit of an overstatement, and blatantly ignores the fact that humans feed from humans in a psychological and biological way that goes beyond rationalization—that’s why we speak of love or spirituality when it comes to human bonds don’t we? This is why wealth is never an ultimate objective, but a tool for social power, power over people.
With regard to the idea of humans being replaced by AI, we should not forget that in today’s developed societies there is an illusion of old forms of menial, tedious, and petty work having been superseded by modernity’s technological labor, yet the reality is that our way of life is only possible because of the slave-like work done by thousands of people around the world.
