Curator of Mastodon.art fediblock :newt: (npub1wc2…4sk7) right, i don't see ads because of ad block. Selling user data.. all the posts are public, if they wanted to make more user profiles they can easily scrape fedi data as well and make a profile about you.
I do agree with you, advertising runs most of the web and it's terrible. It seems to be hard to stay profitable with other financial models as people are not willing to pay for services when they can have them for free
