"summary",
"Breytenbach was born in South Africa in 1939 and lived much of his life abroad, but remained true to his South African roots. He was a key figure in the anti-apartheid movement, and his writing and activism earned him widespread admiration. He was arrested and jailed for his beliefs, but continued to write poetry while in prison. After his release, he became a vocal critic of the liberation government of Nelson Mandela, and also spoke out against injustices in other parts of the world, including the Israeli-Palestinian conflict."
