While very poorly handled, Google did not commit to support the Ubuntu LTS. They supported Windows 7 after EOL because it had a large number of users. Ubuntu 18.4, in 2024, likely has very few. The tradeoff is denying improvements to all other Linux users (possibly losing parity with other platforms) because 18.4 doesn’t ship with software needed to implement them.
Again, terribly handled, but also not surprising from a product perspective.
