It's frustrating to me, having grown up with US spelling, that Australian spelling uses both meter and metre but for different things.
Like, I'm ok with theatre (or cinema for the ones with screens), I'm even fine with tyre, aluminium, and sceptical. I have no problems with colour or using an s instead of z in ise words like theorise. I'm ok saying zed instead of zee. But why does the unit and the thing we measure things with have different spellings but the same pronunciation (and origin)?
