Although personally, I would love for this entire network to be referred to as The Fediverse (which it actually is -- I'm currently using Firefish), many people recognize it as "Mastodon".
Furthermore, despite my preference for decentralization, many individuals naturally flock towards the large servers such as mastodon.social because they tend to believe that if something is popular, it must be good.
Why is this the case? It's because people have a natural inclination towards what is familiar to them. And that, my friend, is the influence of branding.
