It's not about just an open convention. With the primaries there's the expectation of most voters that the person everybody voted for _will_ be the candidate. If it goes to an open convention now and a solid, well-known, widely-accepted candidate doesn't emerge, it's going to depress Democratic turn-out. What the Democrats need to do to win is the opposite: get Democratic voters to turn out to vote.
