Close contacts are a good testing ground, if you can't convince them to do something like changing their mind or behavior, you're not going to succeed convincing complete strangers.
But ultimately the world is too big and word of mouth is too slow.
If you can't say something well, succinctly and put it online, most people will never hear of it.
