The Stonewall Inn in Greenwich Village, New York City, was declared a National Historic Landmark by President Obama in 2016 because of its significance in the movement for LGBTQ rights. Trans women were absolutely fundamental to the uprising that sparked the movement. Yet as a result of President Donald Trump's directive last month that the federal government recognizes only male and female genders, the National Parks Service has changed its website to erase trans and queer people from their page about Stonewall, referring only to the "LGB" community.
“This feels especially personal … when you’re coming into the birthplace of the LGBTQ rights movement — where Pride began — and erasing the history of the LGBTQ rights movement by erasing trans folks,” said Stacy Lentz, co-owner of the Stonewall Inn, to nprofile1qy2hwumn8ghj7un9d3shjtnddaehgu3wwp6kyqpqtay6p24fchv45tnffx2g6r4wvp2hxwlgrlucckpyza2zw8hhyjdq9d6aen (nprofile…6aen).
