I largely abandoned a gmail account. It's not hard. Make a Proton account, and visit every site where you have used that account, as you get mail from them, and change the email address.

There are a (very) few sites that use the email as a primary key. Those may require contacting someone.

After a couple of years, I get almost no mail to that address anymore.
