hi.

I’ve just had the most unexpectedly wonderful month. I have the deepest gratitude to a very dear friend whose patiently persistent nudging, via the song Til You Can’t, finally soaked into my stubborn brain. net effect: I spontaneously decided to visit family for the holidays (Amtrak for the win when last-minute flying is unwelcome). as a result of this adventure, significant relationship healing became possible. I would not have anticipated it, given the history of drama we’ve had, and our usual mutually-fine solution to “maintain a safe distance”. it was time for an upgrade!

the household situation I found not a happy one. this led me to, again spontaneously, extend my stay for several weeks. and that’s when the big amazing win happened: for the first time since leaving home as a young adult, I got to live day-to-day with my elderly mom. because she’s having memory issues, I did not know what to expect. (that first episode of “Mom, it’s me” was painful.) but overall, it was not as difficult as I had anticipated it might be. we got on together just fine.

being able to draw on my “toddler mode” again was a big help. the challenges she encounters in her daily routine are manageable, with just a bit of creative effort. and yes, I needed to repeatedly teach her coping skills and strategies; they didn’t stick with her as well as they would have earlier in her life. the wonderful power of Don Miguel Ruiz’s Four Agreements, especially the “Don’t Take Things Personally”, is pure magic in this sort of situation.

I hope to someday repay the great kindness of my friend; it set in motion such a wonderful loving improvement in my life.

to start, I’d like to pay forward the kindness by offering to answer any questions anyone might have about coping with day-to-day life for a memory-challenged elder (whether or not they have a “diagnosis”). AMA and I’ll share my insights and tips, in the hope they might help others in this potentially-distressing situation. it wasn’t nearly as bad as I had feared. and I am so deeply grateful for the lessons I learned.
