We had a sobering - how could it not be after this past weekend's tragedy - discussion of Vision Zero today. Sobering, but also clear-eyed and ultimately positive and heartening. We're all on the same page about pretty much everything, including that having a deadline - 2024 - was never a great idea, as it has served less as an aspiration or inspiration and more as a hard metric that was never, let's be honest, realistic.
What is needed is not deadlines - terrible word in the current context - but pathways, a path towards the shared goal, and a collective understanding of what is needed to move us down that path, and a sense of urgency about moving us as rapidly down that path as possible.
And one of things that seems needed is a whole culture shift around USian notions of freedom, individuality, myths of the open road, etc. We need to remember, rediscover, that we are a community, not a pile of monads.
