La Reine Etranglée by Maurice Druon. The second installment of Les Rois Maudits starts where the first ended: the infidelities of Queen Jeanne and her cousin have been revealed, they have been secluded in an old castle in Normandy and treated as bad as can be in order to keep them alive. Newly crowned King Louis is torn between his uncle, who rubs him the right way for his own benefit and Philippe le Bel's minister Marigny who wants to keep the legacy of the great king alive, against the wishes of the aristocracy. Ultimately, everything revolves around the ability of Louis to remarry, and that requires an annulment of his first wedding, which can only happen if a well disposed pope decides it. Since the pope died and the cardinals cannot agree on a new one, the situation seems stuck. Still as pleasant as read, and a fascinating delve into medieval French history. #novel #history #french
