Individual independence is important though. It gets a bad rep because for some people it's an end goal in and of itself, so they just end up being self sufficient but not building anything with it other than their old luxury.
It doesn't have to be that way though, if you look through the past of almost any society worth living in they were based on the majority of men being required to provide for themselves before being allowed to participate in collectivisation.
