Understanding these differences challenges common U.S. assumptions about democracy in many European countries.
I lived for many years in Renens, a small Swiss town near Lausanne, which is notable for having a population that is roughly half foreign nationals. These residents only gain political rights after meeting a set of strict residency and integration requirements. However, these rights can be revoked if they move or lose their residency permit.
As a result, political participation is often conditioned on respectability politics, creating and reinforcing barriers to full democratic inclusion, issues that do not exist in the U.S. right now.
