Whether they owned slaves or not, these people represented the Enlightenment, the shrugging off of religious idiocy and the ascent of science and reason. They created a Constitution that ultimately did free the slaves and has provided ever more opportunity for the disadvanted over time. All but one of these "slave owners" voted to abolish slavery in the original drafts of the Constitution, and only Massachusetts voted to keep it.
