"Humans are not the center of life. Neither is any other species. Life has existed on a planetary scale for at least 3 billion years. To me, the human movement to take responsibility for the living Earth is laughable-the rhetoric of the powerless-. The planet takes care of us, not us of it. Our pompous moral imperative to guide a wayward Earth, or heal our ailing planet, is evidence of our immense capacity for self-delusion. Rather, we need to protect ourselves from ourselves."
Lynn Margulis, 1998. Excerpt from the article "Life on Earth doesn't need us" The Independent newspaper.
