The final hiccup was working to figure out why some areas have multiple countries as top-level parents.

Apparently this data model treats island territories (it's mainly, but not exclusively islands) as both their own parents and as children of the countries to which they belong.

(Please note that I'm not trying to make any sort of political statement here. I'm trying to figure out this data and don't know another way to describe this relationship.)

For example, in this data set American Samoa is a country, and is a child of United States, which is also a country. Faroe Islands is a country, and is a child of Denmark, which is also a country.

Thanks to Fabric, I can discover this oddity relatively easily, and update my view definition to better meet my stated "business" requirements.
