Same experience with US visa. Prepped but they don't look at any supporting documents. Renewal of this visa was even easier. Though the US asks for everything electronically and in lots of detail. They ask for all your social media handles. Much more intrusive than the Chinese visa even. Though I suspect the Chinese just don't ask.
One advantage of US is the default 10 year visa. Other countries make you apply every year.
