I am nearly done with Adam Hochschild's "American Midnight" and by god it's good. Extremely unsparing and shocking; it would perhaps be depressing except I find it valuable and reassuring to know that this country has been through some shit worse than our current crisis and came out the other side fine, even if the reasons we overcame it in 1920 were a little sketchy and then we memoryholed the entire episode.
