i like "a collection of simple tools that do one thing well" as much as anyone else. but. i have so much affection for software with the opposite of the unix philosophy. the sprawling canvas of a package that lets you somehow do anything in whatever way you want. disdained by Proper Tech People yet beloved by users. the lotus notes, the excels, the hypercards. the kind of program that empowers people to solve problems by making a gigantic, weird, personal mess
