Flat means no gradients, but that doesn't mean that colour-coding is completely gone — this is the mistake Apple have made: together with the gradients they've got rid of all the colours — making you actually read captions in tinier and thinner fonts and look at the tiny pictograms to tell things apart. Microsoft did NOT make this mistake in Zune/Windows Phone/Windows 8 — their interfaces remained colourful and the typography had higher contrast and was more readable. Try using Zune today — you'd have no trouble navigating the UI even holding the gadget a metre away.
Then in Windows 10 they have fucked it up big time: for some reason they decided to copy the degraded version of their own ideas back from Apple 🤦
This is where everything started rolling downhill for them, Windows 10 Mobile became more like Android and the rest is sad history 😖
