Few early ministerial appointments can have been met with such widespread positive reaction as that of James Timpson as (non-cabinet) Prisons Minister (myself included, see posts over the weekend).
Given the prison population has risen around 7,000 i the last 24 months and has doubled since 1993, Timpson will have his work cut out, both changing the practices of the sentencing regime, and addressing a culture of punishment rather the rehabilitation.
Here's hoping he pulls it off!
