People think that “Ashkenazi Jew” is a synonym for “European Jew” but this is not the case.
Famous European Jews who are not Ashkenazi:
* Maimonides
* Benjamin Disraeli
* David Guetta
* Baruch Spinoza
* Eugene Levy
* Emma Lazarus
* Jerry Orbach
* Peter Sellers
All those people are Sephardic. Quite a few Sephardic Jews have lived in France, the Netherlands, the UK, and the European portions of the Ottoman Empire. They used to live in Spain and Portugal, but they were expelled.
Interestingly, the first Jews to migrate to the Americas (including the USA) were Sephardic, not Ashkenazi.
